BIOGRAPHY

Megs S. Gendreau joined the Centre College faculty in 2018 as Assistant Professor of Philosophy and Environmental Studies. Prior to this, she was Assistant Professor of Philosophy at Cal Poly Pomona and Mellon Postdoctoral Fellow in Environmental Studies and Philosophy at Bowdoin College.

Gendreau has broad interests in political & social philosophy, agency theory, philosophy of sport, environmental & climate justice, and climate ethics. While her early research focused on environmental justice and political agency in fenceline communities in Southern California, since moving to Kentucky, she has begun developing a longer-term project focused on Just Transition in Appalachia and beyond. Gendreau’s work has been published in Ethical Theory & Moral Practice,  Ethics, Policy & Environment  Environmental Values, and she has written book reviews for The Notre Dame Philosophical Reviews and, Ethics, Policy, & Environment. She was elected Treasurer of the International Society for Environmental Ethics in 2019 and will continue in this role until 2023.

At Centre, she teaches courses in Ethics, Environmental Philosophy, Environmental Studies, and post-Kantian German, and European Philosophy. In addition to mentoring students in both Philosophy and Environmental Studies, she became co-advisor of the Pre-Law Program in 2021.

Gendreau earned a B.A. in humanities and social sciences from Hampshire College, an M.A. from the University of California, Santa Cruz, and a Ph.D. in philosophy from the University of California, Riverside.
